Shaping demographic change

A “Berlin Declaration” on the current life situation of German senior citizens was signed on 12th May 2009 in Berlin by former German Family Minister, Ms. Ursula von der Leyen MP, by representatives of the Society of German Seniors’ Organisations (BAGSO), by RDA President, Richard Eberhardt and by representatives of AXA Konzern AG, Galeria Kaufhof GmbH, Pfizer Deutschland GmbH, TÜV Rheinland, Plan Plus Faktor Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH and the German Sociologists Federation (BDS).

The declaration’s goal is that federations, corporations and companies actively engage in the process of demographic change with special reference to the potential and needs of older people and that this goal is included and observed in all federation, corporate and business activities. The signatory organisations, companies and federations – in tandem with the Society of German Seniors’ Organisations (BAGSO) – came up with a list of ten goals. These include the development and promotion of products and services which enable an independent lifestyle well into old age and which enable older employees to remain longer at work in companies and firms.

The so-called “grey generation” is an important economic factor with tremendous business potential. In order to make the most of this opportunity, coach tourism operators should always have this segment of the population in their sights – as customers, as guests and also as employees.

The RDA’s special affinity to senior citizens is evidenced by the fact that the RDA was the only tourism signatory to the 10-point declaration.
