UPDATE! Current information on African swine fever

Country information

The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) has reported an update on the spread of African swine fever (ASP).

Latest information on the update from 21.03.2020: Poland has reported the first case of ASP in domestic pigs in western Poland. It concerns a herd with more than 23,000 pigs in Nowosolski (Nowa Sol), near Grünberg, municipality Otyń. The distance to the border with Germany is about 65 km.

Update from 06.02.2020: The first case of ASP in domestic pigs in Greece has become known. It is a small herd of 32 pigs in the regional district of Serres in the region of Central Macedonia, about 50 km south of the border to Bulgaria.

The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) has reported an update on the spread of African swine fever (ASP). According to this update, the distance to Germany is decreasing. One case of ASP has occurred at a distance of 12 km from the border with Saxony, and 21 km from the border with Brandenburg.

The ASF has not yet occurred in Germany, but is causing great losses in domestic pig populations and wild boar in neighbouring European countries. Currently, there are more cases in Poland.

The spread of the disease occurs, for example, via food such as pork products or sausages, which are taken away in the affected countries and then not disposed of properly. In this context, the BMEL is encouraging tourism stakeholders to provide preventive information to (long-distance) bus travellers from affected Member States.

To this end, the BMEL provides leaflets in various languages, which member companies can obtain in printed form from the RDA Internationaler Bustouristik Verband e. V:

Leaflet „East route“ in German, English, Polish, Romanian, Czech and Russian
Leaflet „West route“ in English, French, German and Flemish

Leaflet „South route“ in Bulgarian, Hungarian, Serbian, Croatian, Greek and Turkish

This article will be continuously updated to keep you informed about the further progress of the spread of African swine fever.
