The 68th RDA Annual General Meeting 2019 and 38th Day of Coach Tourism will take place in the Bavarian city of Augsburg (population 286,000) – a recently announced UNESCO World Heritage site with its Water Management System that documents the history of Augsburg’s water resources management system. It is quite rare indeed to find a single location anywhere where a water management system is seamlessly documented for more than 800 years. Visitors and tour groups can take guided tours and experience the fresh water streams and canals in the old city area of Augsburg and the Augsburg city forest.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites are outstanding testimonials to human history and to the history of the natural world. In 1978, the World Heritage organisation began with a list of 12 sites. Over the years, magnificent monuments such as Angkor Wat in Cambodia and the Great Wall of China were added to the list.

In Germany, unique cities like the old medieval town of Bamberg, the iconic cathedrals in Aachen and in Cologne as well as important industrial structures such as the Zollverein coalmine in Essen belong to this exclusive family of World Heritage sites. The sites presently encompass 1,121 objects in 167 countries around the world. Germany currently features 46 of these extraordinary places, 8 of them located in Bavaria.
Augsburg applied for UNESCO World Heritage status with its unique water management system in 2011. On 6th July 2019, it was registered in the prestigious list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
