Spanish beaches still UK travellers’ favourite holiday destination

Package holidays continue to dominate the overseas UK holiday market with half of the holidays Britons take each year being package breaks according to recently published ABTA research. Package holidays to Spain remain the dominant form of UK summer holiday travel, though now booked online and more personalised. UK Travel companies have also responded to holidaymakers’ changing preferences – offering packages that include tailor-made trips, tours that take people off the beaten track, adventure holidays, river and ocean cruises, well-being breaks and all-inclusive offers. UK holidaymakers also have a chance to personalise their packages – upgrading transfers, choosing their own rooms and even booking specific sun loungers.

Spanish beaches and islands are still UK holidaymakers’ favourite travel destinations. UK customers are also looking at Turkey once again along with Bulgaria – a growing destination outside the Eurozone and significantly cheaper. Visit Britain data does not show any growth in “staycations”, while outbound travel declined in 2018 as did inbound, falling by 3 % to 37.9 million visitors despite the attraction of a cheaper pound. Seasoned UK holidaymakers are also increasingly keen to experience the best of local cuisine and culture.

A growing minority of UK holidaymakers also claim that they would choose one travel company over another for its environmental credentials: 36 % in 2018, up from 23 % in 2014. Sustainable travel has indeed become a mainstream concern and the number of smaller companies pledging ethical tourism has grown. Here lie opportunities for coach travel. More fuel-efficient aircraft have also created long-haul mass market UK holidays to cheaper destinations. Fewer than 20,000 UK holidaymakers went to Mexico 25 years ago; in 2018 this figure was, for example, 677,000.

Trends such as these highlight the importance of coach group travel companies also including popular long-haul destinations as customised group holidays in their current and future tour offerings.
