International travel - sixth record year in succession

Almost 1.2 billion travellers (1.184 billion) were counted by the UNWTO – United Nations World Tourism Organisation in 2015 – the sixth record year in succession. Cross-border travel increased by 4.4%, exceeding average growth rates of previous years. While growth is robust, regional variations are nonetheless evident – causes being economic performance, falling oil prices, exchange rate fluctuations and acts of war or terrorism. Growth in developed countries was 5% in 2015, 4% in developing regions. Europe, America and Asia-Pacific experienced 5% growth in arrivals; the Middle East and Africa 3%.

UNWTO General Secretary, Taleb Rifai, sees in these figures and in tourism’s contribution to growth and employment development evidence of how important continued investment in tourism traffic is – and not only infrastructure but also additional investment in training and further development and in sustainable forms of travel. The UNWTO is positive about growth in 2016, forecasts currently at 4%.
