The latest monthly analysis from leading market researchers GfK (Nuremberg) show that German holiday sales for September and October 2018 were up by 3 % compared to the previous year. Of particular note for RDA members – this growth went completely to online sales channels (OTAs), however, with travel agency revenues dropping by 1 %.

Overall, Summer 2018 sales were 12 % ahead of last year on a cumulated basis. This means that both online and offline German sales channels will end the year with strong growth rates.

GfK’s analysis of sales by 2,000 representative travel agencies, OTAs and tour operator websites found that the top seller in travel agencies and online in September were Winter holidays, which accounted for over 40 % of revenues. Sales grew by 11 % leaving cumulated sales 9 % ahead of the same time last year. This market buoyancy reflects Germany’s strong economy and continued high levels of discretionary consumer spending.

Early bookings for Summer 2019 were also an important factor, representing over 23 % of total revenues. Summer 2019 revenues are so far showing double-digit growth.

2017 was a record year for tourism and travel in Germany with a total of some 1.68 billion days spent on holidays or short trips both at home and abroad. Growth expectations for 2018 are forecast at 2 % by the BTW – Federal Association of the German Tourism Industry.
