From 1st July 2011 overnight guests in Florence, Italy, have to pay a tourism ‘bed tax’ directly to the hotel where they are staying. This tax is dependent upon the category of hotel in question. This means in effect:

• 1 Euro pro person and night in 1-star hotels
• 2 Euro pro person and night in 2-star hotels
• 3 Euro pro person and night in 3-star hotels
• 4 Euro pro person and night in 4-star hotels
• 5 Euro pro person and night in 5-star hotels

Children under 10 years are exempt. No tax is due after five overnights. It is expected that this overnight tax will be extended to the surrounding Province of Florence after 1st September 2011.
